Laser Treatment for Acne
Recently the FDA approved the N-Lite for treatment of inflammatory
acne. The studies involved a single treatment which produced up
to 90% clearing of inflammatory lesions. The clearing averaged 3
months after a single treatment. Recently, a protocol of 3 treatments
(first and second 3 weeks apart and the third eight weeks after
the second). This produced more prolonged clearing, but truthfully,
no one knows how long this will last in a given individual.
The N-Lite is a pulsed-dye laser which had been used for treatment
of acne scars when it was observed that the acne also improved.
The procedure is NO DOWNTIME; essentially PAINLESS
and is QUICK. Improvement in inflammatory lesions
begins very shortly after the first treatment. Many patients had
problematic inflammatory acne reduced to an occasional small inflammatory
lesion. This control takes place without oral antibiotics or Accutane,
which improves overall safety. Some topical agents may still be
required to treat "plugged pore" type of acne. Again,
experience with this and all laser systems for acne is limited because
not that many people have received treatment, so we can't predict
how long the effects will last. What we can promise is safety. The
N-Lite has been used for cosmetic problems, including acne scars,
for 4 years and pulsed-dye lasers for much longer.
The N-Lite is a relatively expensive laser to use so treatments
are $750 for the series of three (3) for facial acne. TANNED
skin cannot be treated until TAN fades.
